Who is on the pedestal?
Artist talk with Jeff Wall
Wed, 17 03 21
With “The Thinker” (1986) and “The Giant” (1992), two iconic works from the oeuvre of the Canadian artist Jeff Wall (*1946, lives in Vancouver) can be seen in the entrance hall of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. While the figure in “The Thinker” sits on a kind of pedestal, the figure in “The Giant” is oversized in accordance with the title of the work. The question of the monument is currently pressing. Depending on social upheavals, what is placed on the pedestal must always be renegotiated. To what extent can Wall’s works be seen as imagined monuments or “anti-monuments”?
The discussion between Jeff Wall, Prof. Dr. Steffen Siegel (Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen) and Christina Végh (Director Kunsthalle Bielefeld) is scheduled to take place at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld and will be streamed live via Zoom; the artist will be connected from Vancouver.
