In the summer of 2022, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld will present an exhibition dedicated to water. Based on its collection of 20th and 21st century art, it follows the questions: What do we see when we look at water? What themes, objects and contexts emerge when we turn our gaze to water in art? In the exhibition, representations of the sea, lakes, rivers and harbours are combined with works that use water as an artistic material and with more recent works that revolve around current debates. Together they span the immense field of projection that the element holds within itself: Water as idyll, resource, trade route, force of nature and commodity, water as medium and indicator of transformation, vitality and creation, and water as locating habitat or home and escape.

A few selected artistic interventions are already preparing for the exhibition in summer 2021:

Katinka Bock: Toxic Fountain (2019) | Sonar International (2021).
The process-oriented, often site-specific sculptural work of Katinka Bock (*1976) is infused with water. She sinks her sculptures or floods exhibition spaces, deals with bodies of water, heating systems and fountains. In summer 2022, her works will be part of our exhibition “DEM WASSER FOLGEN”. Her sculptures “Toxic Fountain” (2019) and “Sonar International” (2021) herald the exhibition already from summer 2021.

Catherina Cramer & Giulietta Ockenfuß:
Unleash the Beast: El jardin sincronisado
Performance in the Sculpture Garden

Wed 18.00
Based on their film series “Unleash the Beast” (since 2020), in which the element of water takes a leading role and is a constant companion, Catherina Cramer (*1988) and Giulietta Ockenfuß (*1986) present “Unleash the Beast: El jardin sincronisado”. The performance mixes ambient sounds composed for the film by the musician Swan Meat with voice recordings of the ocean verse from “The Songs of Maldoror” (1869) by Lautréamont.

Enrique Ramírez:
The lament of the bird and the inverted boat
Performance in the Sculpture Garden

Wed 18.00
The Chilean artist Enrique Ramírez (*1979) deals with the acoustic phenomena of water in his work. As part of a sound performance in the sculpture park, he mixes sound recordings from the surroundings of Bielefeld on a synthesizer with the live sounds of “botellas silvadoras”, traditional Latin American instruments that he has modified artistically.
