44 walls twice, 26 artists twice, 2 locations: Today we’d like to draw your attention to the collaborative exhibition produced by the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and the Kunsthalle Bielefeld.
The focus of the presentations Auf Zeit. Wandbilder – Bildwände / For The Time Being: Wall Paintings – Painted Walls in Bielefeld, and Auf Zeit. Was hinter dem Putz steckt / For The Time Being: Hidden Behind Plaster in Baden-Baden consists of murals from the 1960s onward. Artists’ work with space outside the classic limitations of the painting—what art historian Laszlo Glozer called the «exit from the painting,» in reference to 20th century art— indicates the explosive force of this groundbreaking art form.
Once regarded as a gesture of rebellion against the art market, temporary murals and installations are today an established element of contemporary art. Auf Zeit takes a look at the mural’s past and present. In both Baden-Baden and Bielefeld major works by artists such as Sol LeWitt, Lawrence Weiner, Blinky Palermo, and Richard Tuttle will be reconstructed. Contemporary works by Ernst Caramelle, Douglas Gordon, Arturo Herrera, Kay Rosen, Anri Sala, and Kara Walker, for example, form a bridge to the present.
Artists on display at Kunsthalle Bielefeld: Ernst Caramelle, Jimmie Durham, Douglas Gordon, Otto Herbert Hajek, Arturo Herrera, Imi Knoebel, Sol LeWitt, Michel Majerus, Gordon Matta-Clark, Blinky Palermo, Dan Perjovschi, Bridget Riley, Kay Rosen, Ulrich Rückriem, Kilian Rüthemann, Anri Sala, Karin Sander, Thomas Schütte, Josh Smith, Benedikt Terwiel, Richard Tuttle, Rinus Van de Velde, Alexander Wagner, Kara Walker, Lawrence Weiner, Richard Wright.
Walther König will release an extensive catalogue (german/engl.) for both exhibitions.
The exhibition Auf Zeit. Wandbilder – Bildwände is sponsored by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes and the Kulturstiftung pro Bielefeld.
