School and Kindergarten

We offer guided tours of all exhibitions for school classes and groups from daycare centers. All tours begin with a tour of the exhibition, during which selected exhibits are discussed with the children and young people. Afterwards, the participants can put what they have seen into practice – either linguistically and creatively in the exhibition or practically in one of our creative rooms.
On the left side you can download our offers and the price list for day-care centers and school classes. Here we always deposit our current invitation letter for educators from schools and daycare centers, which we send to interested parties for each exhibition. Would you like to be added to the distribution list? Please send us a short e-mail with the name of your kindergarten or school to albrecht@kunsthalle-bielefeld.de.

We recommend the guided museum tour with creative activities for daycare centers and classes up to 9th grade (1.5 or 2 hours).
We recommend the discussion tour for 10th to 13th graders (1h).
We recommend the writing workshop for 8th to 13th graders; it lasts 1.5 or 2h and offers a creative-productive approach to the exhibition theme in addition to factual information. The Kunsthalle also offers guided tours outside of regular opening hours starting at 8:45 am (also on Mondays!) by arrangement with Tania Müller.

Workshops with different focuses
The exhibitions allow a particularly wide range of approaches and thematic focuses for children, young people and adults, which are directly linked to their own everyday lives. In addition to the individual experience of the exhibited works, we place great value on the active involvement of visitors in our accompanying art educational tours and artistic-creative activities. There is always the possibility to contribute with own ideas, questions and contributions. The individual experience of art and the participation in decoding and interpretation processes make the visit to the exhibition lively, exciting and also instructive.
In addition to conceptual learning, access to art is especially possible through aesthetic experience. The ensuing questions and discussions open up opportunities for children, young people and adults to actively engage with contemporary art and classical modernism.
An attractively designed interplay of active work observation, knowledge transfer and practical work playfully introduces the children and young people to the multi-layered works and gives them insights into the working methods and world of thought of the artists.
In the artistic-creative actions, ways of acting are tested and applied. The children and young people are given the opportunity to productively express their sensory experiences, their ideas, fantasies and feelings, and ultimately to reflect on their actions in everyday life.

Offerings:

A catalog will be published during the course of the exhibition. In the exhibition we show a short introductory film. The film is very well suited to accompany the exhibition visit with young people if you do not book a guided tour. Furthermore, hall texts and our smartphone guide with audio commentaries on the exhibitions are available.

As with all exhibitions, we offer age-specific, educational museum tours with artistic and creative activities for daycare centers and classes up to 9th grade (1.5 or 2h). We recommend the conversation tour for 10th to 13th graders (1h). We recommend the writing workshop for 8th to 13th graders; it lasts 1.5 or 2h and offers not only factual information but also a creative-productive approach to the exhibition topics.

Guided tours of the Kunsthalle are also available outside of regular opening hours, starting at 8:45 a.m. (also on Mondays!) by appointment. If there are more than 17 participants, it is necessary to divide a group into two tours, unless otherwise stated. Pre-registration for school classes is absolutely necessary (even if no guided tour is booked)!

In addition to the above-mentioned offerings, the Education and Outreach Department also offers various cross-age themed workshops for daycare centers and school classes on these exhibitions, in which children and young people can specifically engage with various content-related topics and techniques of the exhibits shown in the exhibition. All workshops begin with a didactic tour of the exhibition and end with a creative artistic activity in the Kunsthalle’s painting studio.

Workshop 1: Frederick Mouse
Summer is here! The little field mice are looking forward to fresh seeds and fruits and go in search of them! Frederick is also part of the party! But what is he collecting? He collects sunbeams, colors, shapes, words and pictures in our exhibitions. And this time he has to be careful not to get his feet wet! Following in the footsteps of the artists, the daycare and elementary school children go with the little mouse on a journey of discovery in the exhibitions. They playfully learn how to experiment with shapes, colors and a wide variety of materials and how unique works of art are created from them. The impressions they gather are then put into practice in a subsequent creative activity in our painting studio. There will be drawing, painting, gluing, shaping, building, kneading and experimenting.
Duration: 120 min
Price: 60 Euro (divided group 80 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group division for more than 17 children

Workshop 2: Water, water, water
Motifs, themes, techniques – everything in this exhibition has to do with water. In this workshop, the focus is first on the different representations of water. After a detailed voyage of discovery through the water worlds, the workshop then focuses on trying out ways and techniques to create one’s own pictures: With and without water on the trail of water!
Duration: 90 min / 120 min
Price: 50 Euro / 60 Euro (divided group 70 Euro / 80 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group split if more than 17 people

Workshop 3: Collecting, collection, art history
Paintings, graphics and sculptures on the theme of water from the Kunsthalle’s collection, together with works on loan in the exhibition, span a period from 1900 to the present day. They thus invite visitors to take an exciting stroll through recent art history. The different art styles from naturalism to fauvism, expressionism to contemporary positions can be discovered and compared, as can the most diverse artistic techniques. Of course, the students will get to know famous artists as well as lesser-known ones before they start their own work in the studio.
An artistic focus can be chosen in advance.
Duration: 90 min / 120 min
Price: 50 Euro / 60 Euro (divided group 70 Euro / 80 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group division for more than 17 persons

Workshop 4: Art secrets
How do you actually do it? In this workshop you will try out a technique of your choice. This can be drawing, printmaking, painting with crayons, chalks, finger or acrylic paints. But also collage, sculpture or sculpture can be a topic.
Duration: 90 min / 120 min
Price: 50 Euro / 60 Euro (divided group 70 Euro / 80 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group split if more than 17 people

Workshop 5: Taking your cell phone (or tablet) to the museum
Almost all students own a cell phone. Communication and contact with friends, the use of social networks, photography and filming are everyday interactions. But can cell phones also be used effectively during an exhibition visit? In this workshop, we will show you and your students some possibilities – from A for app to staged photography and research tasks to Z for zoom tours! The exhibition tour can be followed by an artistic/creative activity in our painting studio.
Not all students need their own cell phone! It is also possible to work in pairs or groups, and we can also provide some tablets. Recommended from grade 7.
Duration: 120 min / 180 min
Price: 60 Euro / 90 Euro (split group 80 Euro / 150 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group split if more than 17 people

Workshop 6: Creative Writing in the Museum
Writing texts and poems in the museum? I can do that too! Let yourself and your students be surprised at how exciting it is to approach the works in the exhibition by means of various writing tasks. The topic of water is a challenge for associations, comments, and your own thoughts. The motifs of the exhibited works are often directly linked to everyday situations and personal experiences. At first, it is possible to work with predefined keywords, which can be extended to vocabulary lists (also possible in foreign language lessons) or own collections of topics. Formats such as elfchen or 4-word poems make it easier to venture into automatic writing or scenic texts. The respective presentations of the texts developed in individual or group work round off the writing workshop. In addition, the students receive tips for the presentation of their work, which support them in articulation and self-expression.
The approach via their own assumptions and associations trains their own perception and promotes individual expressiveness and judgment. The creative-productive approach and the factual information during the tour offer students a lively museum experience in which they are actively involved and which can thus become a positive learning experience. We recommend the writing workshop for 8th through 13th graders.
Duration: 120 min / 180 min
Price: 60 Euro / 90 Euro (divided group 80 Euro / 150 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group split if more than 22 persons

Workshop 7: VTS – Visual Thinking Strategies
The moderation technique developed by Abigail Housen in the USA is a method of dealing with a work in a purely observational way, starting with three questions: What is happening in this image or in this work? What do you see that you can tell? What else can we find? This method encourages independent observation, trains visual, cognitive and social skills, and serves to promote language skills. After first tests with German language learners and experiences with different groups of visitors, we have included this offer firmly in our program and would like to offer all students the possibility to approach the works by means of the Visual Thinking Strategies and to develop joy in handling and dealing with art. This workshop can be booked as a pure discussion without or with subsequent artistic creative action. It is suitable for students of elementary school as well as of secondary school I and II and also for foreign language classes. We recommend a group size of 10 – 15 students.
Duration: 60 min / 90 min / 120 min 180 min
Price: 45 Euro / 50 Euro / 60 Euro / 90 Euro (divided group 65 Euro / 70 Euro / 80 Euro / 150 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group split if more than 15 persons

Workshop 8: Project day: Discover the Kunsthalle
The architecture of the pink sandstone cube of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld is the central starting point and framework for this journey of discovery! Why does the building look different from others? Who works in this building? What is collected and exhibited there – and why?
After the first “tour” of the Kunsthalle from the outside, the students will take a guided tour to discover not only the exhibition and creative spaces, the lecture hall and the library, but also rooms that are not open to the public and their functions. In dialogue with the museum staff, the students find answers to questions they have worked out in advance. The visit to the current exhibition is an occasion and impulse for their own creative work in the Kunsthalle’s painting studio.
180 min, max. 15 persons per group, suitable for all grades
Price: 90 Euro, 2 accompanying persons free of charge, 2 groups possible in parallel
Workshop 9: Sculpture Park Rally
Most rallies are about tasks and time! Who is the fastest? With us it’s different! The children and young people can go on a journey of discovery in the sculpture park of the Kunsthalle and wander around the works of the sculptors, look at them, touch them, explore them, and of course ask questions themselves and answer the rally questions.
During the evaluation, the students will learn about sculptural positions of the 20th and 21st centuries. This workshop can additionally be booked with a subsequent creative activity in one of our painting rooms.
Since the rally takes place outside, please make sure to wear weatherproof clothing.
Duration: 120 min / 180 min
Price: 60 Euro / 90 Euro (divided group 80 Euro / 150 Euro), 2 accompanying persons free of charge
Group split if more than 17 people
